How many planks should you do a day, and how long per time do you do a plank?
Let's ask an expert .
Doug Sklar is a certified personal trainer and founder for PhilanthroFIT in New York City. When asked about how long you should hold a plank, he gave this advice "ideally, hold three planks for up to 60 seconds each".
But if you're new to planking, don't risk injuring yourself. It's okay to start with shorter sets and work your way up to 60 seconds. Forcing yourself to hold a plank for excessive amount of time can put undue strain on your back. This is where you risk injury.
If 60 seconds it too challenging, start by planking for 10 seconds, then rest for 5 to 10 seconds, then re-engage for another 10 seconds. Repeat for three to six times. Don't worry about losing out on gains. Planking for shorter periods of time can still amount to a solid workout.
While planking can certainly strengthen your entire body, you should only do it as long as you can maintain the correct position.
Form should always come before figure.
